Gold & Diamond Export Licence
The Government Gold & Diamond Office (now the Gold & Diamond Division within the NRA) issues all export licences for gold and diamonds. You cannot legally export without one.
- For diamonds, the export licence is what allows you to obtain a Kimberley Process Certificate to take goods out of the country.
- Export licences can cost up to US$45,000 per year.
- A separate Diamond Dealer's Licence is required if you intend to buy rough diamonds yourself.
- On the GGDO register: 21 companies hold current Diamond Exporter's Licences, 40 hold Diamond Exporter's Agent Licences, and 47 hold Diamond Exporter's Agent Certificates.
- Fake licences are common. Using or buying from an unlicensed party is illegal and can lead to prosecution and loss of funds — always verify a licence before you deal.
